Detox vs. Rehab: What's the Difference?

Medically reviewed for accuracy byDr. Courtney Scott, MD· July 2026
People often use the words detox and rehab as if they mean the same thing, but they describe two distinct phases of recovery that do very different jobs. Understanding the difference helps you know where to begin and what to expect from the road ahead.
In short: detox handles the physical side of stopping, while rehab addresses the psychological and behavioral side of staying stopped. Most people need both.
What Detox Is
Detoxification is the medical process of clearing drugs or alcohol from the body and safely managing the withdrawal symptoms that follow. Because withdrawal from substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids can be dangerous, medical detox provides around-the-clock monitoring, medication to ease symptoms, and clinical support to keep you safe. It is the essential first step, but on its own it is not a cure for addiction.
What Rehab Is
Rehabilitation, or rehab, is the longer phase that begins once your body is stable. Instead of treating the physical dependence, rehab addresses the reasons behind it, the triggers, trauma, mental health conditions, and habits that drive substance use. Through individual therapy, group therapy, and skills training, rehab helps you build the tools to stay sober after detox is over.
Why You Usually Need Both
Detox without rehab often leads back to using, because the underlying issues that fueled the addiction remain untouched. Rehab without detox is rarely possible, because it's very hard to engage in therapy while your body is still in active withdrawal. The two work as a sequence: detox stabilizes you physically so that rehab can do its deeper work.
How Long Does Each Take?
Medical detox typically lasts 3 to 10 days, depending on the substance and your health. Rehab varies more widely, from a few weeks of intensive treatment to several months of step-down outpatient care. Your care team builds a timeline around your specific situation rather than a fixed formula.
