Benzodiazepine Withdrawal: Why You Should Never Quit Cold Turkey

Benzodiazepine Withdrawal: Why You Should Never Quit Cold Turkey

Medically reviewed for accuracy byDr. Courtney Scott, MD· July 2026

Benzodiazepines, medications like Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, and Ativan, are prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. They're effective, but with regular use the body can become dependent surprisingly quickly, and stopping them the wrong way is genuinely dangerous.

If you take benzodiazepines regularly, the single most important thing to know is this: do not stop suddenly on your own. Here's why.

Why Cold-Turkey Withdrawal Is Dangerous

Benzodiazepines calm the nervous system. When you stop abruptly after prolonged use, the nervous system rebounds in the opposite direction, and that overexcitement can trigger grand mal seizures, which can be fatal. Along with alcohol, benzodiazepines are one of the few substances where withdrawal itself can kill you. This is why quitting cold turkey is never recommended.

Common Withdrawal Symptoms

Benzodiazepine withdrawal can produce a wide range of physical and psychological symptoms, including:

  • Severe anxiety and panic attacks
  • Insomnia and restlessness
  • Tremors and muscle tension
  • Sweating and rapid heartbeat
  • Nausea and headaches
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Seizures (a medical emergency)
  • In severe cases, hallucinations or psychosis

The Role of a Medical Taper

The safe way off benzodiazepines is a gradual, medically supervised taper, slowly reducing the dose over time so the nervous system can readjust without going into crisis. The right schedule depends on the specific drug, your dose, and how long you've been taking it. Short-acting benzodiazepines like Xanax often cause faster, sharper withdrawal, while longer-acting ones may be used to smooth the taper. This is not something to improvise at home.

What Protracted Withdrawal Looks Like

Some people experience prolonged, or protracted, withdrawal symptoms, lingering anxiety, insomnia, and mood changes that can come and go for weeks or months. A good detox and treatment program anticipates this, manages it with therapy and support, and reassures you that it does improve over time.
